Guidelines For Setting Up FinRev Under A 401K Or SMSF

Many FinRev members have successfully set up their accounts for their 401K or Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF).

Before proceeding down this path, we suggest that members review their reporting and compliance obligations, and discuss their plans with their accountant/auditor to find out if there are any other compliance requirements that need to be met, such as adding cryptocurrency trading to your SMSF investment plan.

The key principle is to clearly separate personal and IRA/401k/SMSF activities.

Available exchanges:

  • Members with a 401K in the USA (or any other countries restricted on centralised exchanges) would need to onboard onto dYdX.
  • Members with a SMSF in Australia can onboard onto either Bybit or dYdX.

dYdX Guidelines

  • Open a Fiat Exchange account in the name of the IRA/401K/SMSF entity to enable fund transfers between the IRA bank account and the Fiat exchange.
    • Most US clients use Kraken for this as they offer business accounts with KYC.
    • Most Australian clients are using CoinSpot as they offer SMSF accounts.
  • Sign the Financial Revolution contract on behalf of the entity (your personal name will be listed as well as your entity name)
  • Open a MetaMask wallet in the name of the entity
  • Connect the MetaMask wallet to dYdX. This is the only step where you can't enter a name, however, it's easy to obtain a list of your MetaMask transactions showing that the wallet transacts solely with dYdX.

For tax reporting purposes, it is advisable to seek advice from an IRA/401K/SMSF specialist regarding your specific requirements.

Bybit Guidelines

  • Ensure your FinRev contract is in the name of your SMSF
    • Note: if you already have a personal account with FinRev, a separate FinRev package is required for your SMSF as it's a separate entity. Please reach out to [email protected] to purchase another package.
  • Open a Business account with Bybit (if you already have a personal account with Bybit, it's important to not open a second personal account or you will lose one of them).
  • Complete business KYC by sending the following documents:
    • Cert of Registration
    • Director’s ID
    • SMSF Trust Deed
    • ASIC Company Extract
    • Company Constitution
  • Once your account is verified wth Bybit, you can then create a sub-account on Bybit and connect the API to FinRev.
